OWIA, in partnership with an Ovim family in diaspora
OWIA has had a regulation since 1998 against giving birth at non government approved centers and hospitals( homes, farm, birth attendants). This is to prevent the deaths of mothers and infants. It was in pursuit of this regulation that the women built the Amangeleukwu health center at the center of the town.
OWIA, in partnership with an Ovim family in diaspora, introduced a pet project to encourage Ovim women to patronize approved health centers and hospitals in order to reduce/prevent infant and maternal mortality. In this project, a mother is rewarded with a cash gift if she delivers her baby in the approved health centers.
The nurses/midwives are also given a cash gift per delivery. The nurses are to ensure that women take antenatal clinics seriously.
Pictures of mother and baby are sent to a dedicated and private OWIA WhatsApp page.
OWIA insists that in cases of difficulty/ complications during delivery, appropriate referrals should be made in good time.
